How to Choose GPS Systems That are Right for You

By Brian Ferrall

Shopping for GPS systems is easy-if you know what you are doing. If you shop intelligently you won't have need to worry about being ripped off. You ask how to shop smart when looking for a new GPS system? What are the decisions that you will need to make? Are there things you need to worry about? What do you need to look out for to avoid getting a shoddy product? In the remainder of this article we will discuss some important things you should be thinking about during your pursuit of a new GPS unit.

Some GPS systems are portable. This type of unit can be easily moved from one vehicle to another. If you want this type of system, you'll have to pay more for it, as calibrating them is more difficult. Having this type of unit is like having a big cell phone that is able to give you directions. If your GPS system is not portable, it will either be build into your vehicle or connected to a power source such as your battery. Do you need a portable or non-portable system? If you only want a GPS unit for help when driving, and you don't need it for more than one vehicle, a fixed type system will serve your needs. If you do a lot of walking or want to be able to take your system into another car when you need to, the portable system will be better.

Which attributes seem the most critical to you? Do you desire to have something that will display a detailed map? Do you desire to have something with a voice? Do you need it to have the ability to work in specific languages?

In what ways do you want them to provide customer support? Do you need lots of guidance? If you answer "yes", you'll need to be sure that your system comes with a customer service that provides help from real people. If you like to figure things out on your own, being able to talk to a live person probably won't seem so pressing. At minimum, you need to be sure that if you want to, you'll be able to speak with a live person who will knows a lot about warranties, returns and various technical issues you may have to contend with. If there is no customer service support available, continue searching.

In what ways do you want them to provide customer support? Do you require a lot of advice? If yes, then you'll need to make sure that your system comes with a human staffed customer service department. If you tend to figure everything out on your own, the option of speaking to a live human won't be as crucial. In the very least, it is a good idea to make sure that if you end up needing to, that you'll be able to speak to a live representative who is highly knowledgeable of warranties, returns and various technical issues you may be confronted with. If the unit doesn't offer any kind of customer service support, keep looking for something else. It does not have to be hard to shop for a GPS unit. It will take you some time. Good research always takes time and in the end, it is absolutely worth it. Noone wants to be stuck with a system that does not meet their needs just because they bought the easy to find, less expensive model. You need to locate a system that meets all of your demands. Besides, the more research you do the more capable you are to walk into that store and come out with exactly what you were looking for.
