Most GPS units are anything but inspiring when it comes to their designs. In the past, the devices were "clunky". However, the Garmin Nuvi 3790T GPS does represent a departure and especially with a very low profile housing design. With the modern new design of the unit, Garmin has also decided to make a few improvements to the touchscreen. The Nuvi 3790T makes use of a new capacitive, high resolution engineering approach which is a departure from the typical resistive variety. It's a change that isn't all that surprising in light of the highly competitive nature of GPS technology.

In keeping with the fondness for personalization in all things, the Nuvi 3790T features myTrends which stores your own most traveled routes. Want to know what your normal driving routine looks like? The new Garmin allows you to record it. Want to compare different routes to work? You can do that too. But why would you even need to use this feature for places you're familiar with? If you decide this isn't something that you want to make use of, you can simply turn it off. But if you're interested in learning fast detours in times of need this is a great feature to have available. If you're looking for alternate routes to avoid traffic jams or detours, this feature can be quite handy.

While it isn't comprehensive enough to include absolutely everything, by using the 3-D Building and Terrain capability, you will get a representation of the terrain and the major buildings. To keep the size smaller, sometimes concessions have to be made on other things. While we don't know if this happened with the Nuvi 3790T, it could be a possibility. Case in point, we have noticed that this unit doesn't seem to perform as fast as other Garmin GPS units. This companies other units seem to have a slightly faster signal capture time than this unit does. Other external factors could have played a part in this certainly. But it is not like it was tested only one time and at one location. Something to think about is that it seems the route algorithm did take cues from the primary travel routes and not necessarily the secondary local routes. That effect adds more time because when driving only on the main roads, it can take extra time.

There is really nothing new about the Nuvi 3790T responding to your voice. You have the ability to customize the speech recognition engine software so it will learn to recognize your voice. We are seeing more intelligent devices these days with a degree of "learning" capability. With this unit, you can teach it to recognize your voice and then activate it, or wake it up, with a special command you say. After "waking"up the unit, all you need to do is say the particular menu command and choice that is on the display. Informing the GPS unit of your destination once you know where you are going is all you have to do..except for the actual driving.

You will still find their Real View Advanced Lane Guidance system in the Nuvi 3790T GPS. For those who are new to Garmin units, this function displays a real life image of the surrounding areas and the road. You will also see that the signs are like what you see in real life. The numerous useful applications of this feature will come in handy on major roads and interstates.

The Nuvi 3790T is a very versatile and technologically up to date Garmin GPS unit. On top of being used for your driving needs or walking needs around any community, you can also use it away from the city when hiking. This is an appealing unit because not only does it come from the known entity of Garmin, it also has a variety of uses and applications.
