What are the best ways to protecting your trailer from theft?

Plenty of people rely on their trailer to carry out their business, while countless others have a trailer for leisure purposes. Trailers can be very expensive - rather than waking up to find that your trailer has been stolen, invest in security today and make sure you don't end up a victim of trailer theft.

If at all possible you should keep your trailer in a locked garage or even a driveway. This is not always an option however, and if that's the case make sure it is parked in a well-lit area. If you know some areas are notorious for crime try and avoid them. Other practical steps include marking your trailer so that it is easily identifiable - this could be a business logo or a postcode, just make sure it is difficult to remove. This may deter thieves and will at least make it easier to recover a trailer in the event that it is stolen.

But what if a well-organised criminal knows the type of lock you use and knows that a grinder will cut through it? In these cases the only hope you have is stopping the thief from having the opportunity to use his equipment. An alarm is one way to alert you to criminal activity and should hopefully make any criminal decide to run rather than risk being caught.

One way to at least make a criminal think twice about stealing your trailer is by marking it in a way that makes it obvious it belongs to you. If you use your trailer for business a logo is perfect. Alternatively an address or your name will also prove the trailer belongs to you. While by no means a certain way of keeping your trailer safe, it is at least a cheap way of deterring criminals and promoting your business at the same time.

Finally a GPS system may not protect your trailer from theft, but it will at least let you track it down. If your trailer is very valuable this may be a particularly attractive option. One final thing to remember when considering how to protect your trailer from theft is that while cheaper alarms or locks may be available, these are the ones thieves are most likely able to tackle. Invest in a decent security solution or you'll only have to pay for it later.
