GPS or Global Positioning Systems has made our lives much easier. Reading maps and stopping for directions has become a thing of the past now that GPS has made our lives more convenient.

This kind of technology is progressing very quickly and is always adding new features. That is why, if you have finally decided to buy one of these for your travel, then you may be baffled as to which one would have what you are going to need and want.

Choose a device that has an easy to read screen, and a clear voice system. While you are driving on busy roads, a clear and precise voice function will prevent you from having to avert your eyes from traffic, while a larger screen will make it easier for you to see the direction you are heading, on the map displayed.

Some GPS models have a voice command which allows you to speak your destination or directions and it should register on the GPS. This is not always dependable but it's nice to have. It is a good idea to try out demo versions in the store. This will allow you to test out this feature. You will also be able to use the On-screen menu. You need to be sure that it is large enough for you to read as well as if there is room for you to use the buttons. Some of the screens can be quite small and it is difficult to press the buttons individually.

If you are buying one, you can purchase a kind that stays permanently on your dashboard or one that you detach and can take with you wherever you travel. The benefit to the former is that you will not have to hassle with taking it out every time you get in the car because it will just be where you want it to be.

It is often a good idea to choose the mobile variety of GPS if you have more than one vehicle for which you intend to use it, plus it can be taken with you whilst hiking or jogging. Make sure to check the size of the mobile device prior to purchasing, however, because it will need to fit into your hand, or whichever pocket or bag that you take with you.

Among the "bells and whistles" a favorite is the points of interest function. It enables you to choose from generic locations like restaurants, ATMs, gas stations or shopping centers. You can choose they type of place you would like to find and the GPS will show all of the locations of that kind in the area or near your destination if you prefer. Once you choose a specific location you will be able to access information like the phone number, travel time, background information and of course, the location.

These days, with new roads regularly being built, and businesses moving to new premises, it would be a good idea to choose a GPS which can be updated easily via the internet, and will provide you with real-time traffic reports, which can be invaluable on a long journey.
